Acacia Fraternity at SU

The Big Event is a University-run event that takes place every spring that coordinates mass community service in the area for one day.  Almost all of the active brotherhood participated in this event, either painting at the Salvation Army or assisting at the American Heart Society’s Heart Walk.

In the fall semester of 2004, Syracuse Acacia underwent a campaign (Adopt A Soldier). The goal was to support troops deployed to Iraq by purchasing/collecting items that went to a Captain and his soldiers, for their use or benefit. Remembering out motto of "Human Service" and knowing that Alumnus Paul Dimoh has a twin brother currently deployed in Iraq, the Acacians of Syracuse set out to improve the lives of those fighting for our country. Our community service chair Bro. Philipose made arrangements with a local Sam's Club to collect items in front of the store. Brothers Tuan, Shubi, Manny, Tom and Ken stood outside for three hours and successfully collected enough items for the entire platoon.

Each year during the holiday season, Acacia chapters around the country collect new, unwrapped toys for children who might otherwise not receive presents. Dubbed Acacia Claus, this annual toy drive is designed to assist local organizations in our chapters' communities. Chapters are encouraged to put their own personal spin on the event — which often involves partnering with local retailers to solicit donations of toys or money from residents and customers. Some chapters raise money separately and make a toy shopping spree part of a brotherhood event. Others dress members up as Santa Claus and his elves and deliver the toys and gifts personally to local agency-sponsored children's parties.

This worthwhile event has not only brightened the lives of countless families in need, it has also provided our brotherhood with an opportunity to show the communities in which we reside that Acacia's "Human Service" focus is more than just lip service. It is a passion that drives and motivates our brothers in every aspect of their lives.

Meals on Wheels at Syracuse is an non-profit volunteer organization which specializes in the planning, and administration of delivering well-balanced, nutritious meals at the lowest possible cost to the those housebound. Encouragement for the Syracuse Chapter of Acacia to get involved was pioneered by Bro. Ben Peskin. Understanding the importance of giving back to the local community, our brothers set aside time every week to either deliver or cook meals. It goes to show that Acacians not only uphold their motto “Human Service” but they live by it.
